Last Wednesday I was off work and enjoying a day chilling out at home, by myself, without the kids - BLISS! I like to have the TV on as background noise and at noon Prime Minister’s Questions began. “Ah, this’ll be interesting” I thought and started paying attention.
The preliminaries over with the actual “Policy” questions began. It ran thus:-
Leader of the Opposition - question
Prime Minister - no answer to the question but “let’s talk about this instead…”
Leader of the Opposition - repeat question
Prime Minister - no answer but let’s talk about the oppositions policies…
Well, this continued, not only through the leader of the opposition’s questions but through every question posed by anyone not sitting on the government benches.
Now, you may think that I am anti Gordon Brown but fear not - I am fully aware that the game would be played in exactly the same way if Dave were PM
At the end of the programme I was deflated having learned nothing about the governments intentions. These people are running the country and we have to put up with their continuous side stepping of issues. We heard recently that our venerable leader couldn’t even give a straight answer to which type of biscuit he preferred - he had to go away and think about it! (By the way my favourites are plain chocolate digestives - easy!)
Our politicians are too busy trying to score points off each other to be honest with their answers - there is no shame in saying “I don’t actually know the answer to that but I shall go away, do some research and come up with one, thank you for asking”.
It is time for a change, the people of this country deserve better and I don’t just mean a change in government, I mean a change in system. The politicians need to get out of their current mind set and start anew. I’m sure most of them are there for the right reasons but they fall into this game playing scenario.
So the first step - let’s campaign to change “Prime Minister’s Questions” to “Prime Minister’s Answers” - they are not allowed to leave the chamber until a proper answer has been given or at least until the Prime Minister has agreed to come back with a proper answer by the same time next week. Only then will we start to see an end to this game playing!
Important news, the ski chalets bookings for our Christmas trip have been sorted out. I need part of the fee by Saturday.
