Being punctual? It really is important

posted by admin in General

I’m going to sound like I’m on a crusade here for lovers of time tracking software or something, but honestly I’m not. It’s just that I have always thought being punctual is important. OK, it’s not absolutely crucial, you can get by with missing appointments and dates and work. But let’s be honest, it isn’t ideal. One of the main reasons for this is that although you may be fine with it, it really doesn’t put a big smile on other peoples'faces! In fact, it can make you out to be a disorganized fool when actually you just have a lot on your plate and are not very good at keeping yourself sorted.

Here are my invaluable – and they really are invaluable tips – to being more punctual and how you can help yourself. There. Don’t say I never give you anything!

Write a list the day before you do anything of what you’re going to do

The riots: surely it was bound to happen?

posted by admin in General

Watching TV ten years ago, things were very different. Yes, culture was leading us towards a door marked Give me instant gratification, but the internet had hardly ramped up properly, and many people were still absolutely clueless to online buying.

Fast forward to 2011 and things are very different. In all areas – irrelevant of class – people are seeking the best in technology. With mobile phones it’s the iphone, and with bicycles it’s the racing bikes which have become so widespread and popular in London.

When the riots happened it seemed to come as a surprise. To my mind it didn’t, and I know plenty of people who feel the same…

One of those people was a friend of mine who works specifically with hr software from octopus . He was at work when the riots came hurtling down his street, and being on the ground floor with big plate-glass windows, he was visible to all the rioters. In the next moment there was a smashing sound as a cafe table came crashing through the glass. A moment later and the looters were moving in, clearing the office of all the computers which had recently been newly installed.

Yes, it was kicked off by a shooting, but what about the rest of it? To me, that just seems like part of the trigger

The really sad part was that the certificates were taken off the wall too. Certificates awarding the fledgling company some prestigious accolades in computer software design.

Much as this was a horrific experience, it came as no shock to my friend. When talking about why this happened he said, “it had to happen. You look at the TV and all the stars are talking about how much money they made last year. It was only a matter of time until the opportunity was seen and seized.” And I think he got it about right. Yes, it was kicked off by a shooting, but what about the rest of it? To me, that just seems like part of the trigger.

I agree with what has been said in the papers and on the news; education is needed to teach the youth – and those in their twenties and thirties – just what consequences their actions will have. This is happening in the courts, of course, but my big fear is that this won’t deter the people who weren’t caught, and now feel that they can get away with anything.

Of course, we are not out of the woods yet. Now we also have to face the fact that there is inequality in the system and that the MPs are getting much less harshly treated than the youth who were in the riots. That said, some examples do need to be made, because without them there will be no bar set to deter them from doing the same in the future.

The Internet Is Evil! Mwa Ha Ha!

posted by admin in General

The internet is evil. You can always count on The Sun to be completely reactionary to whichever way the wind blows. The fact the no one seems to notice that bad boy Murdoch is the one directing the wind is neither here nor there. I came across an article on The Sun online and I couldn’t stop laughing. Posted online in 2004 when anti terrorism sentiment was at its height, the article shows just how stupid we can be sometimes.

Okay, it’s not the most applause worthy playground game of all time, but let’s face it all us little boys were doing similar violent re-enactments when we were that age. The kids portrayed in this article are just like you and I were. To be honest we were probably even worse! It’s not their fault that they were being videoed by some sick people who used their game to incite hatred and more violence. Adults are far worse then children when it comes to playing sick games.

These days anyone of us can upload anything we want on the internet from anywhere in the world. The most pressing concern for people is the data charges they’re subject to when travelling the globe. No one cares too much about whose doing what at the moment as long as it isn’t costing them. To go as far as The Sun does declaring the internet as the root of all evil reeks of double standards. Obviously not one reporter knows what the word %u2018irony’ means considering the report appeared on their website.

It’s true that there are many evil people out there exploiting the internet for their own means, but the only way to stop them from doing it, is to ignore the rants and videos. Publicising the material only serves to propagate the lunatic’s message of fear. Why on earth would we want to do that? Well newspapers like The Sun sell more by preying on our fears so they’re more then happy to assist nutters by giving them all the publicity they wanted in the first place. It makes me wonder if we’ve been targeting the wrong people when it comes to declaring a war on terror. Just look at this video from YouTube to illustrate how stupid people are when trying to blame evil on the internet.

With the wonderful phone hacking scandal still causing ripples around the world, I find it funny that out of all the things Murdoch could have been busted for, phone hacking is the one that will seriously destroy a lot of Newscorp’s credibility. I for one will not be sad to see his family’s influence wane in stature. The only depressing thing about the whole thing is that you know that someone else will take Murdoch’s place and become the new purveyor of fear and hatred all for a quick buck. These aspects of journalism always make me shake my head in disgust.

Being daring

posted by admin in General

Like many people, like you, perhaps, I like to think of myself as a relatively daring individual. Do I jump off buildings with a parachute strapped to my back? No. Have I ever jumped on a passing speeding mugger and stopped him in his tracks and appeared in the local paper because of it? Definitely not (and for the record, the only jump I am likely to do is one where I feel like I have shedded my skin after a spider scared the hell out of me!).

Because life is too short. In my opinion, it’sgood to talk, and catching up with people is oneof the best kinds of talking

Like many people, like you, perhaps, I like to think of myself as a relatively daring individual; someone who isn’t totally boring and takes some decent risks.

So what do I mean by being daring, then, you might ask.

Simple: I mean that if I am walking down the street and see someone who I think I might know, but haven’t seen for ages, I stop them and say %u201CHey, aren’t you…%u201D

Why do I do this? Because life is too short. In my opinion, it’s good to talk, and catching up with people is one of the best kinds of talking. It’s truly wonderful, and that, my friend, is why you should be brave and stop someone if you think you know them.

Of course, it can sometimes go very wrong. It can transpire that that girl with long hair and a buggy is really a grizzly-looking biker dude who is staring at you. A man with massive tattoed arms…

But still, although it can have its hazards — and it really can, so you better be prepared to be insulted a few times by total strangers… — I think the rewards justify the risk. Even if occasionally you end up in a conversation with a man called Derek who has been working at OT Jobs %u2013 doing I don’t know what; I was so bored I think my mind shut off and erased everything it possibly could %u2013for the best part of 25 years…

‘Psst! Pay and Display is Getting Greedier; Pass it on!’

posted by admin in General

If you use a Pay and Display car park, then the chances are that you will still have some time left on your ticket when you get back to your car. So leaving it stuck on the machine for someone else to use is quite a nice thing to do. I, just like thousands of other people, try to do this whenever I can. It’s just one of those small thoughtful things we can do to help out our fellow More

Dare To Volunteer

posted by admin in General

I started with this title because I hear it a lot: people saying how they would like to volunteer, but they can’t…they just, er, can’t. But they CAN knock off work early every Tuesday and head down the pub, or they can wangle a day a week to go swimming. So why are people generally so against volunteering? An easy one to answer, of course, and even I have to admit that I once thought this: it brings in no More

An Education

posted by admin in General

On the train, you overhear an awful lot of conversations. If you know where to stand and who to listen to, the world opens itself up and spits out everything you could ever want or need. Sometimes, if I manage to catch some decent information, I record it on my phone in the notes section. The following are all things I have learned from listening to others on the train:

1) How to cook just enough pasta, but not so More

Zoo Therapy

Zoo Therapy

After a stressful day at work, there are a few things that really help you kick back and relax: one of them is drinking until you can’t feel your face or the ground beneath you – which is probably why I always wake up hours later with the ground beneath me, feeling my face very much… – and the other is eating Pringles, chocolate, and watching The Sopranos on TV all night until you practically feel like you’re a gangster More

Mr Boring

Mr Boring

Growing up, I wanted a better name than “Rich”, not a bit better but a lot better…a name with meaning and purpose, and a name that would make people stop in their tracks with amazement. A name that would make people say “My goodness, why wasn’t I called such a fantastic name?”. To me, at a young age, the name Rich signified all things common and dull and English and boring. I wanted to be called Pablo or something cool More
